New Slate Hill Elementary School Principal Ken Pease hopes
to be out of his new office and interacting with students as
much as possible this school year, which begins on Aug. 24.
"I have a hard time sitting down," he said. "Students will
find me greeting them in the morning, joining them at recess
or sitting with them in the classroom. I like to jump into
learning right alongside the students.
"That is the best way to get to know them," said Pease, who
replaces Dan Girard, Slate Hill principal of seven years.
Girard is now the athletic director at Thomas Worthington
High School.
Pease was a principal in South-Western City Schools for the
past two years and has been with that district as an
administrator or a teacher since 1999.
The 39-year-old began his career in education in the Houston
Independent School District in 1995, teaching kindergarten
through sixth-grade students.
He said he was attracted to the position at Slate Hill
"because of its excellent history and rich diversity."
"I'm excited to be a part of a strong community that
supports schools and the education of all our students," he
said.
Pease is a father of four as well as a long-time educator;
he and wife Kristin are parents to Kathryn, 10; David, 9;
Noah, 7 and Elizabeth, 4.
"I have terrific kids and when I'm not being a principal,
I'm busy being a dad," he said. "We enjoy being together
whether we are swimming at the pool, reading at the library
or playing at the ball fields."
His accomplishments include Outstanding Educator Awards in
2000, 2006 and 2008 and a School Bell Award in 2008; he was
a statewide trainer for the Ohio Mathematics Academy Program
Summer Academy in 2005 and an OMAP development team member
and author from 2004-2006.
Pease said the International Baccalaureate Program at Slate
Hill is an exciting prospect.
"I'm looking forward to fully implementing the International
Baccalaureate Program," he said. "Over the past several
years, Slate Hill has worked to be an IB school and I get
the opportunity to lead the school in this new direction. We
are going to have a very good year."
Pease said he's eager to start the new school year.
"I'm looking forward to school starting and seeing the
hallways filled with kids," he said. "I've heard so many
great things about the students, staff and parents that I am
eager to meet everyone."
"I have a hard time sitting down. ... I like to jump into
learning right alongside the students."
