Worthington Kilbourne's marching band entered an "altered state" as they began band camp this month.

Band camp began Monday, Aug. 11 and will run through Aug. 21, when parents will get a sneak peak at the contest show at 8 p.m. that day in a preview performance, said Director Phil Day.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the first week and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. the second week.

"Our goals for band camp are to teach the kids the fundamentals of marching and playing at the same time and to learn as much of the contest show as we can," Day said.

The contest show is called "Altered States" and is completely original, Day said.

"I have a friend, Noah Taylor, who is a composer, and I asked him to compose our contest show," he said. "He sat down with nothing and composed a show around our theme, which is 'Altered States.' He composed a melody at the beginning and then takes it through diverse treatments throughout the show."

Day said Taylor's music is "very much like film music."

"He is very good at portraying mood and emotion, so the music has excitement in places, peaceful moments and even an angry section," he said.

Visual aids will include a triangle shape.

"We start with the image of a triangle, then add color and other things as we progress from the beginning to the end of the show," Day said. "We're all really excited about the show and the kids absolutely love it."

The band will perform the show first at the first football game, which will be held Aug. 22 at Crew Stadium, against Groveport Madison High School.

The first contest will be Sept. 13 at Western Brown High School, which is near Hillsboro, Day said.

The band also will perform Oct. 4 at the Buckeye Classic at Ohio State University.

"I cannot be more pleased with what the kids have done in band camp so far," Day said. "We have a group of outstanding section leaders and all the kids are working really hard."

Staff members for the camp are Andy Scheurer, assistant band director; Mickey Courtright and Matt Herriott, percussion; Brittany Kaiser, visual effects; and Jessica Justice, color guard.
