Jim McElligott, director of school support and safety for
the Worthington City School District, said district
administrators did not know about the drug sweep conducted
by Worthington police and a Franklin County sheriff's
special investigations unit when it happened Sept. 24.
Of the 13 Worthington-area residents arrested on that day
for trafficking in heroin and other drugs, and others
involved but not charged, only "very few" are current
students at Worthington schools, McElligott said.
"There were very few of our students involved," he said,
"maybe one or two from each high school. Some were adults
that had graduated from our high schools. We didn't get any
tips from anyone and didn't find out about it until the day
it went down."
McElligott said no disciplinary hearings are planned because
the incidents happened outside of school.
The school athletic code calls for discipline if a student
violates the athletic rules concerning drug use outside of
school, but McElligott did not say if any student athletes
were involved in the raid.
Kevin Johnson, assistant principal at Worthington Kilbourne
High School, said it was his understanding that the search
and seizures were all done at residences.
