WHOOPING COUGH OFFERS A 'TEACHABLE MOMENT'
The current outbreak of whooping cough that has been affecting the Worthington Schools (as well as other areas of the nation) offers the district and the community-at-large some perfect "teachable moments." Depending on the age of the students involved, the incident can be used in discussions on biology in general, anatomy, immunology and on civic responsibility. The nature of outbreaks of communicable infectious diseases and the principles of transmission can be discussed, together with the manner in which outbreaks can be stopped and/or prevented. Civic responsibility, which involves not exposing others to the infection, can also be highlighted. Although the principles surrounding an outbreak can be discussed generally, particular personal circumstances should be approached with the help of a medical practitioner who is aware of those factors that will influence the course of action to be taken for each individual or family. The following CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) offers a fairly comprehensive discussion: http://www.bt.cdc.gov/coca/summaries/pdf /pertussis_022205.pdf Abramo Ottolenghi Worthington |
